According to Sight Words, the Dolch Sight Words list is the most commonly used set of sight words. These words comprise 80% of the words you would find in a typical children’s book and 50% of the words found in writing for adults. Once a child knows this list of words, it makes reading much easier, because the child can then focus his or her attention on the remaining words. Sight words or snap words are called sight words because the goal is for your child to recognize these words instantly at first sight.
The Dolch words are commonly divided into groups by grade level. In Ellington, we expect kindergarteners to be able to read by sight at least 35 words by the end of the year from the pre-primer list. In grade 1, students move through the pre-primer list, primer list and the Grade 1 lists. Our second graders complete grade 2. By second grade most students have mastered these lists are learning new sight vocabulary as the volume of reading increases. Students may move at their own pace through these lists reflective of their reading level.
