sMost second grade readers enter second grade with the ability to read silently and aloud with accuracy and expression to support understanding. They will refine this skill throughout the year. The grade level expectation for beginning second grade are levels J/K. Unlike first grade, moving through the levels is much slower and the end of second grade expectation is M/N. Second graders must now keep track of characters throughout the whole book paying attention to how the character responds to events and challenges, synthesize information as they read and adjust their predictions and thinking as they read. Readers must also be able to track their thinking and be able to find evidence to support their thoughts and responses. Second grader readers are refining their decoding and encoding skills through phonics instruction and reading longer sentences and longer passages. They are able to retell stories and identify the main topic and details that support it. Building vocabulary is essential to support comprehension. The more students discuss books and read, the more words are acquired. The more words that are learned, the easier it becomes to use clues in a text to learn new words. Reading aloud to your child is still very important to build vocabulary and background knowledge. This can be a family activity enjoyed by all the members of the family.
